Deuteronomy 5:16 (NIV)
16 “Honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God commanded you. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
That fifth commandment used to give me fits and I am sure I am not the only one! I found my self sliding on the edge of honor and dishonor so precariously that often I was one rolled eye away from being solidly on the other side. It took years to realize that I cannot honor God and call Him my Father, while being a less than honorable daughter to my birth given parents.
Maturity really can come at any age! By striving to understand who I am in God it is imperative that I not selectively pick and choose which commands God has given that I will follow. God’s commands are not part of a life menu that I can have my way.
In my desire to be all that God would have me to be, it is inherently easier to love, respect and honor my earthly parents as the treasures they have been in my life!
Making His praise glorious!
