Today

Proverbs 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Not only did I wake up unusually early this morning, within a few minutes of waking I had an epiphany.   I have been living my life in anticipation and planning based on unpromised tomorrows. Tomorrow, I will start that diet, call this person or that, go through that stack, look up (fill in the blank) on Facebook or Google. There always seemed to be plans slated and relegated to… tomorrow. That tomorrow quickly morphed into a string of looking forward to Friday’s.

I have leapt from Friday to Friday, like the rocks in the James River, when visible. With this morning came the dawning and dispelling of clouded understanding that this year is coming to a swift close. God has graciously given me this day and daily bread. Father, starting today I want to revel, praise and worship You in the precious, blessed moments contained in the very special gift of this today.

English: Nativity scene on the Buenos Aires Me...

Image via Wikipedia

Luke 2:12  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”  (NIV)

No, this is not a joke, someone has stolen the nativity scene Baby Jesus in the manger from a busy street. Having been kidnapped before, every possible precaution was taken, even going so far as weighing the piece down with 80 pounds of cement and cameras in the vicinity. Alas, it was grabbed.  The woman being interviewed on the news was highly agitated and upset, that this had happened, yet again.

My LORD, Jesus Christ is sitting beside His Father, they will not be putting out “amber alerts” to find, not just this one, but the other missing replicas.  I wanted to be upset for a moment myself but I realized that was futile.  There are callous and idiotic people in the world.  People who do stupid things without thinking through to the consequences.  What a lark, they ruined a nativity scene and left a hole where the replica of a baby had been set up.  However, the spirit of the season will not be ruined.  Christ was born and His birth is the reason for the celebrations and displays.   Jesus birth is a fact, it happened and I pray that even through these senseless acts, someone may be drawn to get to know about Christ!

Christ Mormon

1 Corinthians 12:4  There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.

The last compulsory, must knit stitch has escaped my needles.  Whew, I can now resume the slower paced, patience laced,  pre-holiday gift rush knitting.  Then in a flickering  flash I think of someone I might have forgotten, then another and the next thing I  know the sweatshop vibe begins again. What a challenge, to not forget anyone.  The sense of urgency and drive to not leave anyone out during the gift giving season.

I am impressed that same sense of urgency should be present in sharing the love of Christ be.  So, filled with the desire and drive to make sure we let as many people know about the most precious gift of all

Jeremiah 17:7 “But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.

Confidentially, keeping things confidential has been a huge influence over most of my life. Even before I knew the word, keeping a confidence, holding a secret and being trustworthy were traits I began honing in childhood. I can keep a secret with Ft. Knox vault tenacity. The ability to keep things locked away had plagued me as I began to grow in Christ.  The mechanics of  when, what, how to share and what not share. To encourage, , while holding back.

Well, I am here as a witness that it cannot be done. Giving myself confidently and totally to God releases me from the weight of being the vault. Those things given in confidence remain even more securely, held not by me, but in the hands of God to whom I deliver myself every day! This freedom allows me to shout and share the mercies and grace God flows through and into this cracked, but still useful vessel.  I can testify to love!

Newbridge Stained Glass - THE LION OF SAINT MARK

Revelation 19:6   Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.

Some days it isn’t the words but the songs that move and inspire me!  Today, I am awash with praise and joy of the Christmas season.  Today, words are just not enough!  As the text for today says “For our Lord God Almighty reigns.”  I invite the presence and praise of God to inhabit not just this day but every day!  Joy to the world!

Christmas lights on Aleksanterinkatu.

Image via Wikipedia

Matthew 2:2 and asked, Where is the baby born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star when it came up in the east, and we have come to worship him.

The trappings of the holiday season are all around.  Houses have been strung with dazzling displays of lights, wreaths, candles and whimsical moving characters encapsulated in snow globes with their own twinkling lights.  The spectacle  is nothing short of breathtaking.  I find myself riding along in awe.  Santa and his elves are in evidence everywhere, at night.

By the light of the morning sun it all looks, well pretty unremarkable. The cords, extension cords and clips cloaked by the cover of darkness are revealed.  Like sin it looks tantalizing when it is offered all shiny paper, sparkly dressed to entice and ensnare, but by the light of the Son, not so appealing. We must be ever vigilant to not be pulled in by the pageantry but to remember the reason for the Christmas season is to celebrate the birth of  Jesus, my Lord, Savior and King.

Psalm 45:1 [ A Royal Wedding Song ] Beautiful words fill my mind, as I compose this song for the king. Like the pen of a good writer my tongue is ready with a poem.

When my husband and I were courting we practiced that old-fashioned, almost unheard skill of writing letters. In this day and age of immediate email, texts and free long distance we wrote and waited for the mailman.   I will be the first to admit that mine could be long rambling missives, regaling him with my mundane day-to-day activities, that had already been discussed and forgotten by the time the letter was received.   Yes, we spoke every single day and some days, via the technologically forward genre of video conference.   But, something about taking a pen in hand and sitting down to write thoughts, heartfelt desires and histories still appeal to my romantic and simpler time sensibilities.

Sitting down to quietly read the Bible I am reminded that  no matter the version, it is God’s love letter to us.  He inspired different pens to write what He wanted to be said in words easily digested by all.

In God I Trust

Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge Him and he will make your paths straight.  (NIV)

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. (GNT)

I must state humbly that there are a lot of things that I don’t know.  There are words that come out of my mouth that shock even me.  It is then that I realize that when I surrender this vessel to God, He is able to use me, as He sees fit.  When I ask Him to give me the words to speak, my tongue and pen are surrendered for His purposes.  When I release my mind and soul to be governed by God, it just works.   The gift of free will is still very much in my hands, but the realization that for many years it was “my” will that caused me unnecessary heartache and pain opens my heart to be used by God, however.  Very simply, Father I trust you in all things.  You are my Creator, Father and  Protector.  I am not an automaton or puppet dancing idly and without purpose.  You, Father God, alone know what is best for me, you Papa know each and every one of  my needs and desires.  How cheeky of me to not remember that you know me infinitely and more intimately than I know myself.  I trust You to guide my steps, even when the path they are on appear to head in a direction that is more solid than transparent to my feeble eyes.

Forgive me, when I falter, when weakness and doubt try to eclipse the goodness you have for my life, again  I trust you.  As I write these words, I am overwhelmed again by how awesome, loving, comforting and merciful you have been and continue ever more to be.  Father,  I thank you for the grace and mercy that cover me when I walked as though my life blinded by my own soiled soul.  I am thankful to be in that place of complete trust.  Trusting you with everything,  I am your servant, use me as you will!

Genesis 1:27  So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female,

Knitting, weaving, sewing, following a pattern or idea and creating. With each row and seam deepening the commitment toward completion. Some pieces finish quickly, their purposes simple, uncomplicated, yet quite serviceable.

Other pieces, like a skirt, sweater  or blanket done by hand can seemingly to take forever. The stitches and patterns repeated in precise order a rhythm, flow and cadence that can be picked up and laid aside, at creator’s will.  When the process begins we see the pattern and want that for our lives or to give as a gift to another. There is no thought, quibble or question regarding the commitment of time, resources and effort.  I am again humbled that God instilled that measure of time, care and more into each us. Each twist and turn in the fabric of who we are matter to Him. No stitch is unimportant and each has its own duty, we were created as complete and whole, a realization that dawns clearer with each day in The Master’s Hands.

John 6:27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” (NIV)

It is the desire of everyone to leave a mark.  To leave tangible evidence or signs that we were here, lived, existed and thrived.  For some it is the blessing and legacy of children.  For others there are inventions, songs written, cures to illnesses, simple knitted garments, beautiful pieces of art, heart-rending tomes or unbreakable athletic records.  More often than not, these things may or may not win awards or accolades.

The most daunting and humbling thought is that nothing you have ever done in life truly mattered.  That once you pass on, that’s it.  What many people fail to realize is that while their acts did not win awards, make the news or mention in People magazine, they may have touched another person in such a way that they never imagined or realized.  That a smile, unsolicited kind word or gesture, even performing a seemingly unimportant job with grace, integrity and dignity.  Those things each, like stones thrown into a peaceful lake have ripples.  Do all things to the glory of God, everything done for God will last!
